How do oils differ in viscosity?

Viscosity is the most critical indicator. The vehicle’s instruction manual indicates the recommended viscosity range in accordance with SAE J300. There are the following degrees of viscosity: winter – with the letter “W” (Winter), summer – without letter symbols, and all-season (multigrade) oils, which consist of the combination of winter and summer series – separated by dash. The smaller the figure before W, the lower the temperature at which the oil can be operated in winter. The congelation point of the oil corresponds to the following values:

  • 0W – about minus 35°С;
  • 5W – about minus 30°С;
  • 10W – about minus 25°С;
  • 15W – about minus 20°С.
